Naturals in the City 18 - Event Recap.

April 1st was the date scheduled for NITC 18 and guess who was there? Me  and Me. I like attending stuff like this and I got plenty to share with you guys. Topic was about "Wholesome living" and we had speakers who came to talk to us about stuff  like natural alternatives to some household items, Food and Natural hair hacks. I was a little late though but I was able to grasp something....Yaaay!

Let's begin...

Non-toxic Natural and Cheaper alternatives to household items by @itua_yi
Toothpaste;
Most toothpaste contain fluoride which is a neurotoxin and is a potential problem if it accumulates overtime. It is not advisable to use it for kids as it could Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) or even adults. I guess your next question is what is the Natural Alternative? Baking soda + Carrier oil + a drop of peppermint oil for breath freshness....Tadaa. Whip this to a consistency that you like but mix enough that can last you and your family for two days, then prepare another batch. Another alternative is to use activated charcoal which helps to adsorb a lot of stuff and actually does a good job even though its black. Make sure the charcoal powder or baking soda is of fine texture and not abrasive so it doesn't wear out your tooth enamel.

Bathing Soap;
Yesso....you can actually make your own bathing soap with the ash of a plant like plantain or bananas because of their potassium hydroxide content, mix it with an oil under heat (saponification reaction) and you get soap. This is the way our grand ma's used to make black soap and is as natural as it can get. Potash can also be used in place of plant ash.

Deodorant;
I actually stopped using roll-ons a long time ago and I don't regret it. The aluminium in there totally blocks your sweat pores and that's not goodđź™…. Alum is a natural mineral salt that forms a protective layer on the skin and prevents the growth of odor causing bacteria.  A brand I came across that uses Alum is the THAI CRYSTAL DEODORANT STONE. I am sure there are other brands and if you can make natural deodorants, that's even better. The product is humidified with water and then applied to the armpit area.  Sometimes I just apply a drop of Now Foods tea tree and lavender oil, spread it on my palms and apply to my armpit.

Natural Hair hacks from @yellowsisi

  • Stretching your hair with african rubber thread is an excellent no-heat method of stretching.
  • Low maintenance hair style - Do not over manipulate your hair. simple cornrows or even twists can last you up to four weeks if moisturised properly.
  • When exercising, use a cotton cloth to cover your hair rather than your satin bonnet so it soaks up your sweat,
  • Find out products that work for hair, don't combine a ton of products.
  • Be patient ant take care of your hair, hair will always grow

Food talk from @SabirahO

  • She talked about developing a healthy relationship with food and eating healthy,
  • No punishment food, avoiding emotional/stress eating.
  • Also, Exercise is not the only determinant for healthy living.
  • Food journaling helps you know your food pattern and your reaction to certain foods.
  • Honor your hunger - Eat when you feel hungry. Don't wait till the end of the day to raid your fridge.
