ORANGE PEEL POWDER in SKINCARE

Orange is one of the fruits in the citrus family that of course is very beneficial to the human body from pulp to peels even the seeds. When we consume the juice and fibres in it, we throw the peels away not knowing of its amazing benefits to our skin...chai!! (I just had to exclaim...lol, like I wish I knew a long long time ago but oh well...)
So more deets....Orange peel has a very high amount of vitamin C amidst other phytonutrients and flavonoids and because of this, it has a lot of applications in skincare๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡.

HOW TO MAKE ORANGE PEEL POWDER
  • Peel the skin of the oranges excluding the white part on the inside. You can rinse the oranges before peeling or rinse the peels in runny water after peeling the oranges and spread on a clean tray.
  • Dry the peels in the sun (for 5 days), this will help to preserve the citrus content. If you have a net shade, it is better so as to prevent dust and particles from settling on the peels.

  • Put the dried orange peels in your blender making sure the blender is dry and mill the peels to get the orange peel powder then store in an airtight container.

N.B
To know if the citrus was preserved in the peel, take a dried peel prior to milling and break it close to your nose, you should be able to smell the citrus fragrance. I actually made this batch of orange peel powder myself and have been using it.

BENEFITS OF ORANGE PEEL POWDER
  • It has antibacterial, antifungal (source) and antiflammatory properties - Triple A action for orange peel powder to help your skin thrive better, big yaaay! to that.
  • Combats oily skin and Tightens the skin - the orange peels has astringent properties due to its citric acid content so it will definitely help with wrinkles and large pores. It also helps to tackle oily skin and problems associated with oily skin such as acne due to its astringent properties as well.
  • Brightens the skin - Because it contains vitamin C which is a natural lightening agent, it can help to lighten the skin tone and also remove dark spot and blemishes.
  • Exfoliation - orange peel helps to remove dead skin cells from the skin in addition to the fruit acid it contains to reveal a brighter skin.
  • Anti ageing/skin rejuvenation - orange peel is packed with antioxidants such as ascorbic acid and vitamin E (tocopherol) which helps fight free radicals on the skin. It also contains a lot of minerals such as magnesium, calcium which is beneficial to the skin (source).

HOW TO USE ORANGE PEEL POWDER AT HOME
  1. Mix the powder with your black soap if you have that and do so in small batches that you can exhaust within 3 weeks and use as an exfoliating soap (this is how I use it).
  2. Mix powder in DIY facial scrub as well, also in small batches to be exhausted quickly and massage on your skin.
  3. Mix powder with any facial clay of your choice such as bentonite or rhassoul clay. Add water to make a paste and apply as a face mud mask.
  4. Mix orange peel powder with turmeric and honey to form a paste and apply to face (turmeric contains a lot of antioxidants and also has skin brightening properties).
  5. Immerse the dried peels about a tablespoon) in hot water, extract the liquid using a handkerchief and allow to cool then apply on your face with cotton ball as a toner. Rinse off after 15 minutes with warm water.
My face is  actually getting better with these natural remedies I have been experimenting with. There are definitely more ways to use the orange peel powder in your facial or even general skin care. *Leave for 15 to 30 minutes after application and then rinse off with tepid water in circular motions with your fingers*
Because there is no added preservatives in this DIY mixture, I suggest making it in small batches so it doesn't get bad before you exhaust it as powders generally should be free from moisture to prevent mould growth and spoilage.
