Prepoo-ing Your Hair With Onion Juice | Benefits

cisca kinks
I have been hesitant when it comes to using products available in the kitchen for natural hair, reason being that it requires time to prepare because they are not available to just slap unto your hair. I decided to give it a trial since one of my hair goals for 2017 is maintaining healthy hair without breaking the bank.
I tried using onion juice (and rice water - post for another day) this past weekend so let's get into the details.

Ingredients/Tools Needed.
  • Onion
  • Glass bowl
  • Mesh or sieve (I used my chiffon head scarf)
  • Blender / Food processor
  • Empty spray bottle / Applicator bottle
  • Castor oil infused with cayenne pepper (post for another day)
  • Now Foods Tea tree and Lavender oil
1. Chop the onions (I used half of a big sized onion) and place in the blender, add a little water and switch the blender on to process.

2. Once a desired mixture is achieved, place cheese cloth or any alternative in the bowl and pour the content of the blender into it so as to separate the juice from the chaff.

3. Then squeeze the cheese cloth (in my case, I used a chiffon head scarf) in order to extract the whole juice.
4. The plain onion juice is ready!
5. I added a few pumps of my castor oil infused with cayenne pepper to stimulate my scalp....Double stimulationšŸ˜‰.
6. And a few drops of Now tea tree and lavender oil to mask the smell,
7. Transfer the content of the bowl into the spray bottle.
8. The modified onion juice is ready for use.

I didn't use it immediately so I refrigerated it. Prior to using it, I heated it up a little. Big mistake 'cos that just released the ingredient (allicin) that gives onions its smell. Yuck! I had no choice but to use it like that.
9. Apply the juice to scalp and massage it in (After massaging enough of the juice and realized I still had more, I sprayed the remainder on the rest of my hair).
10. Largely twist hair,
11. Cover hair with shower cap so the heat generated will allow your hair soak in the nutrients.

Next time I refrigerate onion juice,  I will just let it get to room temperature before use rather than warm it up.

  • It is rich in sulfur which is one of the building blocks of hair.
  • It helps to stimulate your scalp by increasing blood flow to the scalp resulting in thicker and fuller hair.
  • Possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help with scalp infections.
  • Has high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Helps with premature greying.
